Book Review: Hollow City

Last month I reviewed the debut novel by Ransom Riggs called Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children and now this month, I’m reviewing the second novel to this collection called Hollow City. Now, I’ve you have watched the film before reading this book then I will say that this book has nothing to do with the film at all, not even a little bit.

In fact, the film is totally different to the ending of the first novel and all of the second. Admittedly, I’ve not read the third novel but I have every single intention of it since I’m so interested to see what the ending is like for the peculiar children. As I said in my first review, these books are incredibly imaginative and creative. They feel so real that it wouldn’t surprise me if Ransom Riggs had been alive and experienced the second world war himself. It’s written with so much history and life to it that it literally makes you feel like you’re experiencing or have experienced it. When reading this novel I felt even more involved than the first which is probably because they’re travelling through loops and through 1940.

After escaping from the hollows on their little island of wales the peculiar children and Jacob Portman travel to London in hopes of finding a cure for their beloved Miss Peregrine. However, along the way Jacob’s peculiarity begins to form and Jacob is struggling to find his place within the group especially when Enoch makes things so difficult for him. His relationship with Emma is blossoming, but his biggest fear is that he may never be able to save his friends and Miss Peregrine and make his way back to his normal life but that depends on whether he actually wants to go back. The hollows continue to look for them and everybody knows what will happen if they do find them.

This book was even better than the first in my eyes. It was so indepth with the war and the history behind it and whilst reading it I felt that I was reading it from the view of an actual peculiar children. I stated in my first review that the random pictures throughout the book irritated me and this is something that continues, I would much rather than being in a big section throughout the book however I do understand why they are placed where they are. The pictures are incredbile and I think it’s even better that they’re pictures of real life people which makes this book even more worth reading.

If you’re interested in a book with all different genre’s in it then this one is exactly for you! In fact the whole collection will be, remember to read the first novel of this collection first to fully understand the story.

Favourite Drugstore Brands

Hi guys!

Today we’re talking about some of my favourite drugstore brands. The drugstore have some amazing brands to offer these days and some that I will forever go back to more than I would with high end products. The variety they have to offer is outstanding and drugstore brands are really trying to bring out an affordable priced product with high end formulas and I’ve found some brands do really well with this. So, keep reading to find out my favourite drugstore brands and why I love them.

Number 1: Revlon

I’ve been using revlon products for around a year now and I’ve definitely found some killer products that are brilliant and can definitely be mistaken for high end products. The variety of makeup Revlon offer is outstanding and the formula’s are brilliant. Admittedly, as with most brands they do have some hit and misses but overall I genuinely recommend Revlon. My favourite Revlon products is the Colourstay foundation and the Photoready powder. The Colourstay foundation at one stage was the only foundation I would ever use, it’s got such a high coverage and it glides on perfectly. Generally I use my beauty sponge to buff it in and it leaves such a flawless base and they also have a large variety of colour selection to choose from. The Photoready powder is another win for me, it’s fantastic. I’ve not been using this for as long as the foundation but it’s become a must have product for me. I couldn’t live without it. It sits on my face perfectly and doesn’t cake up at all, it’s so lightweight and feels so soft. It also sets my undereye area so well that it doesn’t crease at all throughout the day.

Number 2: Rimmel

Rimmel have been a long time love of mine. I bought my first ever makeup product from Rimmel and have loved them ever since. My first foundation was the Wake Me Up foundation and I often go back to it, I’ve been wearing makeup for around 5 years now and this foundation has been one I always return to. However, this is not why I love them. Rimmel is super affordable and the selection has definitely expanded brilliantly. My favourite products from the range are the Kate Moss lipsticks, their beautiful creamy formula, for me is the best in the drugstore and I always head to their range to look for new lipsticks. They last all day and don’t bleed at all, my favourite colours are the 107 for the Autumn/Winter season and 38 for the Spring/Summer season. I’ve never been a fan of their eyeshadow selections at all and some of their mascaras really don’t do it for me but their nail varnishes are also brilliant and as I said above, their foundations really are brilliant quality for such an affordable price. They’re the ideal first foundation for any person new to makeup.

Number 3: Bourjois

Bourjois have been a recent new love of mine, having been curious to test their products out I finally done it at the end of 2016 and I will never look back. I’ve not tried out everything that I would like to with this brand but I’ve definitely found some amazing products whilst using them. My favourite, go to product from Bourjois is the Radiance Concealer which was my first ever product from them and my go to concealer. It’s amazing, the coverage is outstanding but the best thing is that it’s so brightening under the eyes and super longwearing. I use it to highlight my under eye area, bridge of my nose, chin, cupid’s bow and centre of my forehead and it leaves such an amazing glow to the face. I also love the Black Kohl eyeliner, it’s so good and so easy to blend. It’s actually my favourite pencil liner that I’ve ever used. It’s really longwearing and doesn’t run throughout the day at all. I love to line my upper waterline with this and run it along my lash line and blend it out to create a smokey look.

Number 4: Revolution

If i’m ever looking for a new eyeshadow palette from the drugstore, I always head straight to the revolution stand in Superdrug. They’re the best in the drugstore and are ideal for makeup beginners. They offer such affordable dupes of high end palettes like the Kat Von D Shade and Light palette, as well as the Urban Decay Naked palettes. They’re fantastic, so blendable and buildable. Really buttery and smooth on the eyelid. I love them. I also think the Iconic Lights and Contour Pro palette is outstanding and an excellent dupe for the Nyx contour palette. For £8 an identical dupe to the nyx palette for such a great price. Their contour shades are my go to and I think they’re fantastic for all skin tones.

Book Review: One Little Mistake

Today’s book review is on the novel One Litte Mistake by Emma Curtis, due to be released June 29th 2017.

This book was fantastic, a little slow starting but by the end I was totally hooked and couldn’t put it down without knowing what else happened. It was incredibly written and so intelligently thought out. It was definitely one of the most tense novels I’ve read to date.

Vicky has the perfect life with her gorgeous husband Tom, her beautiful children and her best friend Amber but still managed to find ways to mess it up. However, Amber has been keeping some secrets of her own. In hopes to fill the gap in her life Vicky makes a decision that will change her life forever and confides in Amber, little did she know it would be the biggest mistake she would ever make since Amber has so many secrets in closet.

I was sent this book and it never really appealed to me, eventually I thought it was time to give it a go and I’m so thankful I did. This book definitely started off slowly but by the middle the plot comes together and it all ties in perfectly. Emma Curtis really thought about it well, it’s incredible and I absolutely love it.

100% recommend and you should head out and give it ago yourself! Release date is the 29th June 2017.

Mario Badescu Drying Lotion

I have recently been breaking out in acne and I have been trying everything to make my skin in a better and healthier condition. The winter season definitely ruins the condition of my skin and at the moment its in desperate need of saving. I come across this Mario Badescu Drying Lotion on Beauty Bay and the reviews were outstanding. So many people were saying how amazing it is since it literally dries up acne overnight and I couldn’t help myself but have to try it.

As I said, I got mine from Beauty Bay for £13. It’s actually a very small amount of product of only 1oz but you definitely don’t need to use a lot. I apply it using a cotton bud, dip it in once and apply to my face. It’s got a really strong chemical smell, which is definitely really off putting but I definitely see a difference since using it.

I don’t think it’s an easy and quick fix to acne but it definitely reduces them faster than any other product I’ve used. I put it on before I go to sleep and I do find the large ones are very reduced and the smaller ones are minimised but not totally gone. I find that it really makes my skin feel dry too, so I always make sure to moisturise in the morning.

Truthfully, it’s not wowed me or changed my life but it can see me continuing to use it for large areas of acne to reduce them slightly.

If you’ve tried this, let me know your review. Did you like it?

L’Oreal Paris Infallible Total Cover Concealer Palette

In January I purchased the newly released L’Oreal Paris Infallible Total Cover Concealer Palette from Superdrug for £9.99 and i’m finally getting around to giving you guys my full review! The drugstore have been releasing some incredible products throughout 2017 and this one is one that I’ve been loving and I can definitely see me repurchasing. For the price you get three concealer shades and two colour correcting shades which personally I think is a bargain. However, the concealer shades are not universal at all and can only be used by those with fair to medium skin which is probably the only downside.

I mainly use the green colour correcting shade to minimise redness and I rarely use the purple shade and if I do I place it under my eyes. I then use the first concealer shade to apply over the colour correctors before applying my foundation. I don’t ever use the 2 middle concealer shades as they are too dark for me but the formula of the products is outstanding for drugstore. They are so full coverage and they blend brilliantly, personally I don’t ever use the concealer on top of foundation as I find it cakes slightly. Overall, I love this product and this would definitely be ideal for makeup artists and travelling.

BirchBox Unboxing // March 2017

My March BirchBox arrived rather late this month, therefore my review on it had to be late, super sorry! However, it’s arrived and I’m really looking forward to digging into these wonderful products.

This month (and some other months) we’ve been able to choose one of the items that goes into the box. This month it happened to be one of the new Benefit They’re Real lipsticks and lipliners. I chose mine in the shade Lusty Rose as it seemed like the shade I would wear more often. It’s a very pretty, mauve shade and it looks beautiful with so many looks. Since the box arrived I have not stopped wearing it but I’m still unsure whether I love it. I definitely enjoy the colour and creamy formula but it just feels so heavy on my lips and if I’m paying attention to it and sometimes I can’t help but pay attention to it, I find that it really irritates me. These lipsticks retail at £16.50 full sized.

Next is the Batiste Dry Shampoo and Conditioner. I’ve been having a love affair with the Batiste Dry Shampoo for so many years now and I will always go back to it for a dry shampoo. I find that it works brilliantly, it isn’t bad for the price and the scents are gorgeous and really help the texture of my hair when I don’t feel like washing it. I’ve used this a few times and I do see a difference with this product in comparison to the original dry shampoo, I just find that my hair different with it rather than the original. Don’t get me wrong, I still love my dry shampoo from Batiste but I think this may be a new love of mine. This is a newly released product from Batiste (I could be wrong but I don’t think I am) and retails at £4.49 full sized which is around the same price some of the other dry shampoo’s from the brand.

I’ve never tried anything from the brand BalanceMe so when I received the Instant Lift Primer I was immediately excited. I love trying new primer’s and seeing what works for me and what doesn’t. This primer is supposed to help pores disappear and by using ingredients such as hyaluronic acid and acacia gum, it tightens and smooths the skin to create the ideal complexion. I have tried this already but I don’t feel like I’ve tried it enough to give a proper review. I also think the sample size is far too small and has very little product in it that I may only have 2 or possibly 3 portions left. This then means that I have to head out and buy the full sized product, which is £22 to see whether I really do like it.

I also received the Marcelle Gentle Makeup Remover for Sensitive Eyes, this retails at £14.50 and is a BirchBox exclusive. This is probably the product that I am least excited about, I often just use my normal skincare routine to remove my eye makeup and that works absolutely fine. I never go out of my way to purchase an eye makeup remover simply because I don’t think it’s worth the money and I don’t find any micellar water’s irritate my eyes at all. However, it’s a nice treat to have and I’ll take full advantage since I have it and hope that I don’t enjoy it too much because £14.50 for a eye makeup remover is a little pricey.

Lastly, I received the Rituals Sensational Foaming Shower Gel. I received the Rituals Magic Touch Body Cream in my October BichBox and loved it, it was incredible on my skin and made my skin feel really hydrated and refreshed. Since I’ve already tried something from this brand it has definitely made me look more forward to trying this shower gel.and it’s a foam which I find so much to play with!

Let me know what you had in your box this month.

Book Review: The One We Fell In Love With

This novel by Paige Toon made me rekindle my love for reading again. Since Christmas I found myself not enjoying reading as much as I used to and The One We Fell In Love With was the perfect romantic novel to remind m.

Rose, Phoebe and Eliza were identical triplets and as many siblings do, they had their differences. However the three of them were different in all ways other than their appearance and their love for Angus, their next door neighbour. At 17 when each of them met him had they known he was going to be play such an important part of their relationships I’m sure the sisters would have never batted an eyelid at him.

I heard so many people raving about this book and since my parents bought me it for Christmas I thought it was about time to give it a go. It was the best decision I’ve made. This book was written beautifully and with so much passion, Paige Toon has really thought about the characters in this book and they were written perfectly. The relationship between the sisters felt so real that I could easily have imagined I was one of them. It’s beautiful, heart warming and I cried an awful lot.

The Body Shop Tea Tree Review

I’ve previously written a post on The Body Shop Cleansing Butter (look here) and when I was looking for new products from their collection I come across the Tea Tree face cleanser and face wash and just like every other beauty blogger I had to do a review, it’s only natural.. right? I’m sure you all know by now that I love trying out new skin care and seeing what works and what doesn’t work so well. When I came across these in store I was instantly interested in how beneficial it would be for my sensitive skin.

I use these products together by using the facial wash to begin washing my skin and then follow on by using the cleansing foam twice. I do this twice to make sure that I have definitely removed all the makeup and dirt from the day. I’ve found that these products are good, i’ll give them that. However, there isn’t really anything particularly special about them. They don’t have an extreme scent of tea tree, it’s just right which is what I like about them as a lot of tea tree products really are overly scented with tea tree and I find it difficult to use them.

I can definitely say that the face wash isn’t good at all for eye makeup, I find that I’ve still got to go in with some micellar water or eye makeup remover to fully remove all of my mascara and eyeliner. When looking for a face wash I like to find one that fully removes all of my makeup otherwise I feel like I’m paying a product that isn’t totally effective and that’s a waste.

If you’re the type of person who doesn’t wear that much makeup and is looking for a cheap product to remove dirt and excess makeup then I totally recommend these and they’re specifically ideal for sensitive skin.

What’s In My Makeup Bag

My makeup bag changes at least once a month and I’ll add to it if I buy new products that I like. Some of the products that are currently in my makeup bag are quite new and that I’ve been loving these past few weeks. I had realised I have never shared with you what is in my makeup and some of my go to products that have definitely been updated since I first launched my blog. So, since this post is going to be quite long I’ll jump straight into it.

I’ll start with base products, in my makeup bag I have the Rimmel Insta Fix and Go Setting Spray. I’ve been loving this, I won’t say too much because I’ve got a review coming up about this wonderful little thing. I also have the Maybelline Baby Skin Primer, this stuff literally sinks into the skin and is a dupe for the Benefit Porefessional. I recently purchased the L’Oreal Infalliable Total Cover Concealer palette which includes the green and purple colour corrector which I only use from this palette along with the lightest concealer shade. I don’t use this palette every single day but definitely for evenings and meals out.

I have a go to foundation at the moment, the Milani 2-in-1 foundation is my one true love. Incredible formula and such full coverage. I also have two concealers the Maybelline Fit Me which is the same as my skin colour to help cover any imperfections as well as the Bourjois Radiance concealer that has been my go to for months, however I am looking to switch this one up so send me your recommendations.

For powders I have the Revlon Photoready that helps me to stay matte all day long but I also use the Avon HD Finishing Powder which I don’t know if I’m enjoying or not, perhaps I’ll let you know.

For bronzer, blush and highlight I have been using the Tanya Burr Rosy Flush Cheek palette which I absolutely love and works brilliantly with my fair complexion. I also have to include my trusted Hoola bronzer for contouring, this stuff is incredible and I couldn’t be without it.

For eyebrows I have been using the Benefit Goof Proof Pencil in shade 4 and the Sleek clear brow gel. I love this combination and my brows always look as I want them to when I use them, whether it be a bold statement brow or natural.

Since Christmas I have been using the Morphe 350 palette and I can’t leave it. It’s been the best palette for Autumn and Winter shades. Since the spring is coming I’m likely to take this out soon although I’m devastated about it. For liners I have the Maybelline Master Percise liquid liner as it has such a thin tip it allows me to make the most perfect eyeliner. I also have the Bourjois Black Kohl and Contour liner for my waterline.

I have my favourite mascaras at the moment that are the Too Faved Better Than Sex and the Maybelline Push Up mascara. I like to use the Too Faced mascara on my top lashes and the Maybelline on the bottom, it creates the most beautiful fluttery lashes.

For lip products I have several just because I can’t help myself, firstly the Nivea original lip balms are my favourite so I have at least 2 of them. I also have the Sleek Matte Me liquid lipstick in Velvet Slipper for my statement says, the Urban Decay Vice lipstick in Streak for those natural days. Lastly I’ve been using the Lord and Berry Lip Crayon in Intimacy for a few weeks now and I love to use it for those days when I have to head out quickly.

There you have it, this is my entire makeup bag and the products I’ve been loving recently.
