Top 10 Makeup Brushes

Out of all the beauty tools, I own to help me do my makeup I always manage to go back to my trusty and loved brushes and sponges that I swear by. I’ve seen this post travelling around and I absolutely love it! I think it’s fantastic to see the variety of brushes that people love and rely on and I thought I would share with you guys a few of my favourites.

#1 Real Techniques Bold Metals Brush in 301. I love to use this to apply contour, bronzer as well as to add powder under my eyes. The shape of this brush really helps to get a really nice, sculpted look but as well to evenly distribute powder under my eyes to set my concealer and make it last longer.

#2 Real Techniques Bold Metals Brush in 203. I use this brush to blend away eyeshadow. I also like to use it to add darker shades to the outer v of my eye. It’s also incredibly soft which I love for my eyes.

#3 Real Techniques Bold Metals in 200. I like to use this brush generally to apply concealer under my eyes and even to blend around blemishes. It’s also brilliant to apply a base colour to my lids after applying an eye primer.

#4 Real Techniques Contour Brush. This brush is from the original face collection and oh my god. I bloody love this brush, in fact it’s probably my favourite out of all the brushes I’ve mentioned. It creates a beautiful contour and because the tip gradually becomes smaller it really helps to make a precise line. I also love this brush for setting my base with powder and applying highlight to the high points of my face. I can imagine it would be good for blush as well.

#5 BH Cosmetics brush in 110. I love this brush to add bronzer and it really helps to create a natural and gorgeous looking dimension to my face.

#6 BH Cosmetics brush in 109. This is a duo-fiber brush and I love to use this to buff in my base and to really make my makeup look flawless.

#7 Morphe Brushes. I got these next two in a set (check it out here on beautybay.co.uk) for £20 but my favourites are a medium sized fluffy brush. I use this for bronzer and I always love how natural it looks.

#8 Morphe Brushes. This is a fan brush which is also from the same set and I just love how it applies highlight. It really does help to make it really precise.

#9 Morphe Brushes in B39. I love this brush, it’s a fluffy blender brush and I use this to apply crease colours and blend them away. It’s so fluffy that it blends like a dream.

#10 Spectrum brush in C06. This is such a large fluffy brush, ideal for blending away product. You can also use this to apply lid colours. It’s incredibly soft and really changes the way your eyeshadow looks.

There we have my 10 favourite brushes! Let me know some of yours, I never say no to trying some new brushes.

What To Take To University

University is the most fun but nerving experience. Especially if you’ve ever lived alone it’s more than likely going to worry you for weeks. What do you need to take? Well by now I can assume you’ve read years worth of Freshers week guides and shopping lists. However, take it from a recent graduate and soon to be masters student, you don’t need to take everything including the kitchen sink to last you through your degree. Here’s my list of things to pack and purchase to be prepared for you time as a newly found fresher.

Remember before you begin o pack check your accommodation for the appliances that they supply, you don’t want to turn up on moving day and find all 8 of you have a kettle and toaster. Not necessary and a waste of money especially since a lot of the time you’ll be provided this in the communicable areas.

Reminder: YOU CAN PURCHASE THESE THINGS ONLINE AND IN STORE WHEN YOU ARRIVE. You’re not moving to the middle of the sea. Get the basics and buy what you need.

Kitchen:

The most important and worrying for me was to know what to pack kitchen wise. It’s hard to prepare for every single meal you’ll ever make for the whole year. I’ll continue to repeat this, so just take the basics.

  • 4 pieces of cutlery.
  • 2 dishes.
  • 2 plates.
  • 2 glasses.
  • 2 mugs.
  • Culinder.
  • Bottle opener.
  • 2 sharp cutting knives.
  • chopping board.
  • Baking tray.
  • 2 sauce pans.
  • 1 frying pan or wok. Both are useful but can be used. No need for both.
  • Tin opener.

These things will get you buy for several weeks and anything extra buy from amazon or your local wilko.

Personal items:

If you don’t need too, don’t take everything. You honestly don’t need to take every book you’ve ever read or ever film you may watch eventually.

  • Computer/laptop
  • Printer – isn’t necessary as the universities have their own, although it is useful.
  • 2.5 weeks worth of clothes. You don’t need more than that, washing machines are a wonderful invention.
  • Lots and lots of underwear – I bought extra because you lose these in washing machines, things get old and tear. Buy them whilst you have the money.
  • 4 towels – again, useful.
  • Medication.
  • Glasses (if needed).
  • Makeup and other beauty tools (straighteners, hair drier, tooth brush).
  • Photo graphs. They’re nice to make a room feel a little more comforting.
  • Posters – walls look lonely.

Anything necessary you see fit. Again, you don’t need to take your whole bedroom.

Other:

  • Duvet
  • Pillows
  • Bedding x 3
  • Bath mat.
  • Some books.
  • A TV may come in use with an console if wanted but remember, you have to pay for your own TV License (see your accommodation pack for more information).
  • Stationary – you will need this! A lot of it. I totally recommend the wilko budget brand, don’t break the bank. You will run through a lot and lose plenty.

I totally recommend doing a food shop when you arrrive instead of buying before you set off. We don’t live in the Stone Age, there will be supermarkets available.

Fresher’s Week Survival Guide

As the days go by fresher’s week is approaching and so many students are wondering how amazing fresher’s week is going to be. Except what they don’t think about is how unwell they’ll become if they don’t care for themselves or the practical decisions to make in order to make sure you don’t blow all of your money during the week and be left without any money at all for the rest of the term. Having experienced many fresher’s weeks I’ve managed to learn a few tips and tricks in order to survive the most incredible but exhausting week you’re about to experience.

So, continue to read on about how you can survive your first week from uni. Remember to be careful when enjoying your week, you’ll more than likely be in a new place with new people and as exciting it is, not all people can be trusted. Ensure you never leave your drink alone and to be safe when heading out and not to head home alone. Please don’t feel pressured into doing anything you don’t particularly feel comfortable doing and make sure you know your drinking limits.

1- This is probably the most important tip I have to cope through fresher’s week. Budget, by doing this you’ll be able to set aside money for each night that you’re out and as long as you stick to it you won’t end up completely bankrupt and calling your parents asking for money before the week even ends. I suggest planning a budget on the day you get there or the day before and budget for around £30 a night and to buy alcohol from a supermarket for pre-drinks as this is the way to get drunk and you won’t have to spend as much money when you’re out. You more than likely won’t go out every single night as well, which does follow onto my next tip.

2- Fresher’s week does fly by and with that at the end you’ll be exhausted and the dreaded fresher’s flu will begin. To prevent having the worst cold of your entire life, take a few nights out. You may find you aren;t interested in some of the events that are being held and on those nights I totally recommend having a hot bath/shower, have a proper meal and head to bed for an early-ish night. Yes, the old lady in me has come out but it’s so important that you maintain your health and well-being during the week and the continuing term.

3- You’ll find across the week that you’re going to meet people or a specific someone that you think is totally incredible and gorgeous and with that.. well you know what happens. Ensure you take precautions to stop any unwanted accidents happening. Whether you visit your local doctor before heading to uni to be placed on birth control, condoms are still an important factor of safe sex.

4- You’ll definitely have your fair share of take-away’s during the week but try and have a few properly cooked homemade meals. Doing this will provide you the nutrients and a healthy balanced diet as well as a method to help you last longer whilst you’re out. It’s never nice to feel starving, bloated and unwell when you’re drinking and yes, heavily drinking.

5- Do other things than just drink. You’ll be in a new place and it’ll all be totally differnt, yes you’ll have three years of your life to explore but you’ll find that people in your building will be doing certain things. So get involved and this is an extra important thing to do as you’ll be able to meet friends outside of your flat.

There we have it, some tips and tricks on how to survive freshers week safely and appropriately! I hope you enjoy your first fresher’s week and continue to enjoy your degree, it’ll be the fastest years of your life but the most incredble and rewarding experience you’ll ever have.

Take a look at some of my favourite Pinterest finds. You’ll find that these are mainly home decor because well.. I can dream about what my non-existent house should look like.. right?

📸: Industry Standard Design

These hanging shelves as so easy to make and you can make them to style any room. I personally would paint them an off white colour and match with pale pink ornaments and mirrors.

  • Top left photo: A beautiful custom designed shelving unit made of an old chest of draws. I like how the inside of the shelves are painted a bright colour to match with the white and wooden theme. It looks very modern and very fresh. Would definitely add a lovely bit of colour to a simple room.
  • Top right photo: I love everything about this room. It’s exactly what I would have my own bedroom like, I would perhaps add a few more mirrors (I have  thing with mirrors) but it’s my ideal room.
  • Bottom left photo: I love books and this would be perfect for a living room to show off all of your fantastic novels. I’d probably change this and paint it wooden but it’s beautiful regardless. I also think this would be quite easy and simple to make (perhaps time consuming though).
  • Bottom right photo: The perfect way for every nail varnish lover to show off their favourite shades. I think this is so elegant and adds such a beautiful touch to a bathroom or beauty room.

August Goals

I’ve read a few blog post recently all about people’s monthly goals. I thought this was such a fun and creative way to keep track of my goals and see how well I have done at the end of each month. I’m aware that we’re almost a week into August but I did actually start these things at the beginning of the month, no harm right?

August 2017 goals:

  • Lose 7lb in weight – Might seem a lot but I’m hoping to get as close to this as possible and I’m already 2lb into this!
  • Save £50 – £100.
  • Finish the Harry Potter book series.
  • Grow my nails and maintain them.

Let me know yours, I’d love some inspiration!

USA Beauty Haul

As you know, I recently spent 4 weeks in America and whilst there, I obviously bought some makeup. I did try and pick items up that I couldn’t get in the UK or that are cheaper in America than the U.K. I only picked up a few things, simply because I’m not a millionaire and almost all of these things I had planned to purchase before I went.

Firstly, the biggest item that I purchased is the Anastasia Beverly Hills Modern Renaissance palette, which I got from Sephora for $45. I’ve had my eye on this palette for SO LONG. So yes, I’m aware that Im super delayed at getting this. Until a few months ago I hadn’t even thought about getting it since I thought i had a lot of the same shades in other palettes, however when I swatched it in store I couldn’t get over how soft and gentle the shades are and how the pigment blew me away. I haven’t ever tried anything from ABH before so I thought this would be a good time to trial and test the products. I’m over the moon with the palette and can’t wait to test it out to its full potential.
I also got the Urban Decay De-Slick Oil Control setting spray. I loved the Urban Decay All Nighter setting spray so I jumped at the chance of trying out this one. I do get very oily throughout the day and I’m hoping that this changes the way my makeup looks and sits on my skin. I did purchase a travel size and this was around $13.

The hype of this product has been around for so long now and I just knew I had to get it. So when I saw it in Target I didn’t hesitate to purchase it. The Physicians Formula Butter Bronzer has been an absolute storm in beauty and everybody talks about how amazing it is, especially the scent. This was around $14 dollars and having only tried it twice, I can’t give a full review but I can say that the smell is gorgeous.

Just like the bronzer, I just had to try one of the Wet N Wild blushes, I got a shade that is a coral tone as I find that it compliments my skin well, especially with a tan. I honestly don’t remember the price of this product but it was definitely lower than $5 and again, I’m yet to try this as I wasn’t wearing makeup during my time in America.

I also come across Elf Brushes at $3/$4 a piece. I know these can be purchased in the U.K. but I couldn’t help but purchase some due to the pricing of these. I bought an angled foundation brush that I’ll use for highlighter and concealer. The other is a fluffy contour brush, but can also be used for other products. These brushes are super soft and apply makeup generously and comfortably.

Finally, I was desperate to pick up something from Tarte and I especially wanted the Tarte Shape Tape. However, I went to so many Sephora’s and I still couldn’t find a store that sold it. Instead, I went ahead and purchase the Tarteist Pro Glow To Go palette. This is just a 3 pan contour and highlight palette. I do want the larger contour and highlight palette but I didn’t want to spend the money if I didn’t like it. I opted for the smaller palette that has 2 highlight shades and 1 contour/bronzer. The bronzer/contour is quite dark and I thought it would look like mud on my face but fortunately it doesn’t at all. It blends amazing and I can’t wait to use this repeatedly to give it a proper trial. I got this in the till section so I’m unsure about the pricr, approximately between $15 – $20.

Let me know if you want reviews on any of these products!

How to: Beach Waves

I love a beach wave look throughout the summer, especially when I’ve used no heat to create such a pretty and easy style for the hot days. I know a lot of people use a curling wand or straightener to do these waves but I can’t seem to achieve this look just as I want too when I do use either a wand or straightener.

However, I really enjoy creating this look by French braiding my hair the morning before, sleeping on them and then taking them out when needed.

Once I’ve taken the braids out I’ll start by running through a pea sized amount of Moroccan Oil through my hair, mostly aiming it for the tips as I find that it can make my roots look greasy. I’ll then continue with combing my fingers through my hair to separate the curls and use a bit of dry shampoo to add texture to my hair. I find using dry shampoo let’s it to stay longer and sit nicer too! That’s pretty much all I do and if I find them dropping throughout the day, I’ll maybe add a little mouse or hairspray to give more volume and tidy it up a bit but generally it doesn’t drop.

That’s exactly how I style my hair to create beach waves! Check out my social media:
