Book Review // The Start of Me and You

The second book I read by Emery Lord was called The Start of Me and You. I’ll admit, it wasn’t as good as When We Collided but still very enjoyable.

At a very young age, Paige suffered the loss of her boyfriend and never thought she would feel the same again. Eventually, life had to change and she realised that there was a lot of things that she wanted to do and no longer wanted to be stopped from doing them. The new school year began and it was time for her to make those changes, but will she ever be able to swim if she doesn’t dive?

The book was just as lovely as When We Collided by Emery Lord. Although I did prefer the other novel, I must admit that I like the character of Paige. She actually reminded me of myself and the things I realised when I knew my life had to change because of anxious thoughts and holding myself back. I love that again, Emery Lord has written in a character who is homosexual and I think that’s such a wonderful aspect to her books because she shows that she is so accepting of everybody’s background and lifestyle choices.

September Favourites

September has come and gone, I feel like this year has flown by. What happened to January 2017? I’m bringing back the monthly favourites because they’re my all time favourite posts to read and I love sharing with you guys what I’ve been enjoying throughout the month. I’ve got some fantastic new things to share with you that I have been loving during September!

Firstly, Rimmel released some liquid lipsticks that I just couldn’t wait to get my hands on! My favourite is the shade coral sass which is essentially an orange toned red shade which I absolutely love on myself. It’s kind of a summery shade but to be honest, I’ll still be wearing throughout the autumn/winter months. They’re so incredibly light weight and dry super fast without making your lips feel dry and chapped.

Converse are a statement shoe in my wardrobe and I especially love them for nights out since they are so comfortable but also can make any outfit look fab. Whether you’re dressing down or dressing up, converse just don’t seem to make an outfit look bad. I bought a white pair (I’m silly, I know I’ll get them dirty eventually) and I’ve been living in them. If you’re a student like I am, you can get 10% off when you purchase any item from schuch which is where I bought mine from.

This will be the second time I’ve mentioned this jacket on my blog but I just can’t help it. I purchased a suede biker jacket from New Look last month and I honestly thought it was the biggest mistake and that I wouldn’t ever wear it since I didn’t know how to dress it. However, I was wrong and this jacket as become my absolute go to! I’ve been loving it. I’ll wear it with a pair of jeans, boots and a white top or even with a skirt, cami and converse for nights out. It’s become a statement jacket that I couldn’t live without.

Since moving back to uni green tea is all I drink (other than wine..). My current favourites are mint, along with apple and cucumber! They’re so refreshing to drink and really help to detox your body, especially after a heavy weekend of drinking.

I’ve been regularly going to the gym to workout and I never ever thought I would enjoy going but I just love how it’s been making me feel. I’m so much more energetic and lively now I’ve been regularly working out! An hour a day in the gym and a 15 minute session of yoga really does make the world of difference. I’m a totally different person! Honestly, I don’t think I could stop going now. I picked up a big at the end of the month and actually felt so guilty for not going to the gym! Although I knew my body needed a rest so that’s what I did.

I finally watched Wonder Woman for the first time and I’ve not enjoyed a film more this year! She was so badass, empowering and bloody gorgeous! The film really was one of the best I’ve seen this year and I can’t wait to watch her in Justice League.

Lastly, the TV show Victoria returned for season 2 and I have been obsessed! I really enjoyed season 1 and I anticipated the return for season 2 and it was totally worth the wait. I love the drama and the history of the show. It really makes you think about the way their lives are as a royal family.

These are my September favourites! Let me know some of yours in the comments and maybe I’ll try them out during October.

8 Dissertation Survival Tips

At the beginning of my degree, I was told that my time in university would go faster than I had expected or wanted and I thought they were wrong. However, they were not wrong and the past 3 years flew by and my dissertation came and went but it was the most stressful experience ever. It’s not the most fun experience I have ever had but I definitely discovered a few things to make the time more bearable. So, here are ___ ways to survive your dissertation.

#1: Take 1 or 2 days off a week from your dissertation. You’re allowed a break and it’ll help you to refresh and prepare yourself for more work and research.

#2: Dieting isn’t going to happen whilst writing your dissertation and if you’re able to, I want to give you a medal because I couldn’t do it at all. I found having snacks near me helped me to stay more motivated and the more words I would write the more snacks I deserved.

#3: Sleep is important and I will constantly say this regardless of the activity. You’re going to get stressed and it’ll be exhausting, with that you’ll need a decent night’s sleep and a casual nap.

#4: Don’t ever forget to shower.

#5: Changing locations from your usual place may help you to think differently when it comes to writing. Often I wrote mine in my bedroom but I loved going to the library as I found myself more motivated and I wrote differently.

#6: Do something to help you relax, whether it’s to read a book, watch a film or hang out with your friends. You need to be doing different things other than writing your dissertation all the time.

#7: Create a timetable. You’re going to have other assignments to write alongside your dissertation, I found it was the best way to organise myself. I liked to plan for a month and would give myself time to dedicate days to other assignments and other things which were not education-related.

#8: Starting writing early!! I began my dissertation during the summer because I had a lot of free time and I was able to dedicate my time to my literature review and methodology. By the time you go back to university you’ll be well on track and you’ll be able to dedicate more time to making your changes and beginning your research.

I wish you all the best of luck for your upcoming dissertation and I want to remind you that you’ll be incredibly thankful for when it’s complete.

H&M Beauty Sponge Review

H&M have been a little hit and miss with me across the years, their clothing is lovely but the sizing is often difficult to figure out. I’ve always been intrigued by their beauty selection as I know again some people say it’s hit and miss, certain products are fantastic but others are a little difficult to work with.

So, when I was in there recently I saw that they had their own beauty sponge for a bargain of £1.99! I’m always interested in testing new sponges because they’re such a statement in my routine that if I can find an affordable one then I’m always pleased!

Can I honestly say that this sponge has changed my life? No, it really hasn’t. If I’m totally honest, for £1.99 it isn’t the worst sponge in the world but I doubt I’ll ever repurchase this again.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s an OK sponge. I do find that the sponge sucks up a lot of product which is so irritating and the faint bumps along the sponge can transfer and make the foundation or concealer look weird and leaves marks.

                   SPONGE VS BRUSH

I tested the sponge on one side of my face and a brush on the other side. Personally, I preferred the finish that the brush gave me because it just looked more full coverage and flawless. Whereas the sponge just took away and sucked up the product. So it made the one side of my makeup less full coverage and a little more cakey.

I really do think the Real Techniques sponges are really worth the money and I would rather invest in the more expensive sponges (only like £4 more) since they are more effective. They don’t suck up the product and actually really do make the products look flawless and exactly how I like it.

Mini Haul

Over the past few weeks I’ve purchased a few items here and there that I thought you might want to see, well even if you don’t I’m going to show you anyway. So, I’ve been preparing for freshers and thought I’d pick up a few clothing items for the Autumn season and I decided to grab a few beauty items as well.

I decided to grab myself a few new makeup brushes. I’m rather lazy when it comes to washing my brushes so I bought extra ones for when I’m extra lazy and don’t wash them when I should. I picked up the Real Techniques Flawless Base Set from Boots for £10.99, it was half price which is fantastic. Comes with 4 brushes which include the buffing brush, contour brush, square foundation brush and the small detail brush. I’m an avid fan of the Real Techniques brushes and I do always try and pick up them when they’re on sale. I especially like this set because it comes with the brush cup which is ideal to store your brushes in! You can pick them up from Amazon as well at discounted pricing which is fantastic.

Their brushes are excellent quality for drugstore pricing and I love that they have introduced more expensive brushes such as the bold metals brushes. The brushes are always so soft, they blend products like a dream and they clean brilliantly. What more could you want?

I also picked up some eye shadow brushes from Amazon, they were at a bargain at £3 for 12 brushes. They were recommended amongst the blogging community for the fact that they are crazy affordable and they are so fluffy, soft and the quality is fairly decent for the price. I honestly thought they were going to be a sham and awful but honestly, they’re decent and do the job well. Bargain buy of the year I think.

I was having a little look in New Look and I come across a suede biker jacket and fell totally in love with it. However, I didn’t buy it for weeks because 1. I didn’t know if I would ever wear it and 2. Not knowing how to style it. So, when I come across it again on the website I bit the bullet an bought it anyway because well, treat yo’self ladies.

So like I said, it’s a suede biker jacket in the colour stone. It’s more of a beige tone and I’m not gonna lie, I love it. I’ve had leather jackets in the past but I never wore them because I always felt like I looked odd in it, so I donated it to charity. I personally don’t think I look nice in leather and I feel strange and I feel so much better in the suede jacket. I find that I can match it with so many outfits (Pinterest is my go-to for style inspo). I paid £39.99 and it’s perfect for nights out and day looks during the autumn and winter months.

I needed some new trainers to head back to uni in and I went ahead and purchased a new pair of low top converse. I love converse for nights out or even day wear, they’re such fashionable and practical shoes that last such a long time. I’ve had my last pair for around 3 years now before they separated at the bottom. If you really look after them they’re fantastic and will last you a long time. I got them in white and I’m feeling quite brave with them. I’m really hoping I can keep these ones clean!

I visited Carmarthen during August and got very excited to see that my new little town has a Lush store! So obviously I went in and treated myself to some bath bombs. I purchased my all time favourite, I Kyle baby bot bath bomb, this is my favourite ever and whenever I have a bath in it I just feel so much softer and more relaxed. I went with the  rocket science bath bomb and it’s made my skin feel so incredibly soft and fresh. It also really helped to relax me and make me feel so happy and healthy minded.

I also bought some basic black skinny jeans because when can ever have too many, right? These were £9 from primark and they sit lovely.

I went ahead to Superdrug during the 3 for 2 offer and bought several little bits to add to my collection. The Collection lasting perfection concealer is an all time favourite and for £4.19 you can’t go wrong! It’s got full coverage and such a lovely colour to highlight the under eyes.

I also repurchased the Collection contour stick in shade 1, this was also around £4 and it’s the perfect grey toned shade to contour the cheek bones with. The consistency is lovely and it’s so blendable, it’s easy to  built as well which is what I love the most about it.

Lastly, I had my eye on the new Rimmel liquid lipsticks and I bought mine in the coral shade. These are £5.99 and I’ve heard nothing but good things about them. I honestly feel like this lipstick was the best purchase of all. It’s so creamy when applied and it’s so lightweight which makes it an absolute dream to wear. Lovely colour and the formula is right up there with some of the best.

How I Bleached My Hair

Recently I changed my hair colour from a light brown to an ombré style,  brown/blonde. I’ve had it like this previously, around 2 years ago and life got in the way and I lost interest in maintaining it. However, now I’ve decided that I miss having blonde hair so I changed it back.

I used several products to achieve this look. As fairly straight forward as it is, it does need a lot of time and effort to do it. So make sure you have several hours to spare in your day and be patient, ensuring you get every bit of hair.

I bought everything I needed from the Superdrug website for £21. It’s a lot cheaper than visiting a salon as long as you’re doing it correctly.

What you’ll need:

  • Mixing bowl.
  • Brush.
  • Touch of silver shampoo and conditioner – Doesn’t need to be this brand but it does need to be purple.
  • Brown hair dye for roots.
  • Jerome Russell Maximum Blonding Kit – This also includes a mixing bowl, brush and cap. Along with the bleach.
  • Jerome Russell platinum blonde toner.
  • Foil -Although not in the photo, it’s useful to keep heat in and help the bleach to work better.

I also recommend doing this with someone to help you so you make sure you get every part.

Process:

Step 1: section your hair into 3 sections. The front 2 parts and the back. I used clips to keep these sections in place.

Step 2: see where you want to stop at your root and prepare the bleach.

Step 3: place a piece of foil under the section of hair and begin to apply the bleach at the tips of your hair and work up. Do this for every section.

We chose to not hit the root at all and even leave a little of the previous colour to make it look more of a subtle transition.

Step 4: once finished, apply the head mask to maintain heat and help the foils stay in.

Step 5: I waited 40 minutes before checking how the colour looks and then decide on whether you want to keep it on for longer.

Step 6: Once you’re ready to take it off, wash out the colour using the conditioning shampoo provided within the box. Then determine the levels of brassy tones within your hair and apply the toner.

Apply the toner all over the bleached hair and put the plastic hood back on. Use a hair dryer to add more heat to make the toner more effective. Allow the toner to develop for around 30 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with a purple shampoo and conditioner. And blow dry.

Repeatedly wash your hair with the Touch of Silver Shampoo and Conditioner, leaving in the both the shampoo and conditioner for longer than usual and continue to use to see improvement.

After:

I am very much aware that my hair still has brassy, golden tones in it. This is actually fine and I know with the use of purple shampoo and conditioner and perhaps another toner, this will minimise within time and I’ll progressively make my the shade in like.

I never actually used any of the brown hair dye since I didn’t feel like I needed it.

10 Reasons To Have Long Distance Friendships

Maintaining friendships can be difficult but even more so when they’re long distance. I have many friends who live away from me. Whether it’s across the country in Scotland, or across the world in Canada. During the last 3 years I’ve made so many friendships with people who I don’t see on a regular basis but that doesn’t mean they’re any less a friend to me than the ones I see on a weekly basis. I appreciate all my friendships but the long distance ones are the ones that you should be most grateful for. Why you may as. Well, here at 10 reasons why we should all have a long distance friendship.

1. They make so much effort to keep the friendship going. I have a friend who lives in Canada and that 5 hour time difference is often difficult. So even just staying awake a little longer to make sure I speak to her is so meaningful.

2. They’re easier than people think. A simply message or a phone call once a week can really make someone’s day. You don’t have to spew to them every day, just now and again to let them know you’re still alive and well.

3. You get to travel! Who doesn’t love a reason to visit a new country, city or town? I know I do. I love that I have reasons to visit my friends all over the world! I have a friend who has just invited me to visit her in Dubai whilst she works. It’s an amazing opportunity and one that I’ll most definitely take her up on.

4. They’ll listen to you rant about the people who annoy you and they’re always on your side. Admittedly, they’re often biased as they sometimes don’t know who you’re talking about, but they’re on your side and that’s the most important thing!

5. You always have something to look forward too. You may not see them right away but this way, you know you will eventually.

6. You don’t fight! You don’t spend enough time together to annoy each other or find flaws. They’re perfect forever.

7. Whenever you think of them you’re always reminded of certain events and memories. It’s lovely to look back on old times.

8. You’re both so comfortable with the fact that you each have other friends. You’re guilt free when it comes to hanging out with other people and they understand.

9. Long distance means long term. If you can survive a year without seeing them and meet up like everything is normal and you saw them the day before. They’re a friend for life.

10. The bond between you both is often stronger than a friend you’ve known your whole life.

I have so much love and time for all my friends but the ones I have around the world, well they’re some of my most treasured friendships. Ones that I know I’ll have forever.

However, this is especially dedicated to my friend Jessica Wallace. The girl that moved into my student house unexpectedly and became one of my very best friends who I love so dearly. I miss you, my little maple syrup!
