Book Review: Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children

My newest book review is here and it’s a good one! This week it is on Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs. I bloody love this book, it’s so creative and imaginative and ideal for children. It’s incredibly written and so fun! I totally recommend to everybody. Literally anybody, regardless of what genre you usually go for this is so suitable for everybody as it has a little bit of different genres from romance to thriller and mystery.

Jacob Portman had been listening to his grandfather’s stories his whole life, stories about a group of peculiar children whom he lives within a children’s home in Wales. As he grew older he realised that these were in fact just stories and those of which he doubts until he visits his dying grandfather and witnesses a creature that only he could see. Grandfather Abraham would describe simply as a monster. He and his father spend 3 weeks in Wales in hopes to learn more about his beloved grandfather and instead learn more than he could ever have imagined.

I think this book is incredible. I’ve not come across a review that says otherwise yet. It’s so fun to read and it makes you remember all those imaginative stories you come across as a kid. The book has old pictures of these peculiar children and I love that you get to see what these children would have actually looked like. However, it’s so frustrating that they’re in the middle of chapters throughout the book. Don’t get me wrong I love the images I just wish there was more of a structure to it as I found that I would get distracted by the images when reading a chapter.

This book is fantastic and has made me so excited to read the second and third instalments! Let me know if you liked or disliked it and check out my social media.

Date Night Makeup Look

Valentine’s Day is approaching and we all want to look out best for our significant other. So, get your best dress out and your favourite lipstick and away we go! I really enjoy the basic, natural eye look with a red lip. Keep reading to find out how I achieve this look!

I always start my makeup off with clean, moisturised base. I then go in with the Benefit Porefessional Matte Rescue primer and massage it into my t-zone, since this is where I have the most issue trying to keep foundations to sit. After it’s settled I used the Maybelline Fit Me Matte and Poreless foundation and buff it in with a dense brush. Taking the Maybelline Fit Me concealer in light I used my Real Techniques sponge and made sure everything looks seamless, ensuring that I bring it down my neck.  I then set my base using the Revlon Photoready powder to make sure it stays put throughout the whole night and making sure I especially pack it on under my eyes and nose area. I used the Too Faced Grande Hotel Cafe collection to add a light bronzer from the Gingerbread Cookie palette and blusher from the Peppermint Mocha palette (pictures below) and then highlighted my cheek bones, bridge of my nose and cupids bow with The Balm Mary Lou Manizer

For the eyes I want to keep them simple and classy, with a strong eyeliner and light crease colour. Using the Too Faced Grande Hotel Cafe collection again, from the Eggnog Latte palette I started with using the ‘Frosty Nog’ shade all over my lid and then using the shade ‘Skinny Latte’ in my crease, slowly building it up until my ideal shade. I added a strong wing to my upper lash line using the Ciate Fierce Flicks eyeliner and the Bourjois Black Kohl eyeliner in my upper waterline.

For my lip colour I used the Avon Cosmetics matte lip colour in Wild Cherry all over.

10 Thing I’ve Learned From Amy Schumer

Amy Schumer has become a worldwide success and one of the most influential women in the entertainment industry. She is known for her work as a stand-up comedian, actress, producer, director and writer and the woman  with the lower back tattoo. She’s utterly fantastic, her experiences throughout her life have been shown in her book and after reading it I couldn’t help but share some of my favourite quotes from it. She’s brilliant and having been a fan of her work for sometime now I’ve learned a few things from her. So here we have it, 10 things I’ve learned fr Amy Schumer. Enjoy!

“I’m a flawed fuckup and I haven’t figured anything out, so I have no words of wisdom to offer you.”

We’re human. It’s totally acceptable to be a fuckup on occasions and make mistakes but that’s okay because there are 7 billion people in the world who do the exact same thing.

“Never let a magazine or dating site or matchmaker monster tell them they’re in a lower bracket of desirability because of their age, weight, face or sense of humour”

Regardless of your appearance you deserve to be treated with the same respect as everybody else. Nobody was born looking the same (except identical twins) and if I’m totally honest, I don’t want to be a size 4 model. Be happy with who you have, love yourself.

“You don’t need a man, boy or self-proclaimed love expert to tell you your worth”

We are all worthy of kindness, love and respect. Don’t get me wrong, it’s nice for people to acknowledge my worth but I don’t need it. I know I’m valued and I deserve to be just like everybody else.
“You are hot and the person who loves you won’t notice 10 extra pounds. I promise”

Weight doesn’t determine love or worth. You can lose or gain pounds and still be an asshole, it’s who you are that counts.

“He was the most beautiful man I had ever seen, and I was immediately turned on just looking at him. Quick side note: THAT NEVER FUCKING HAPPENS. Every day, men look at women walk by in skirts and tight jeans and get tiny erections, or at the very least some sort of arousal. But for women it’s a rare occurrence to see a dude and think, dayummmmm!”

For all those men who think that all woman walk around admiring every man they see. You’re wrong. Not once have I walked down the street and thought about how much I wanted to rip his clothes off. It doesn’t happen, it’s not a lynks deodorant advert.

“When you get older and wiser, you get your confidence from within, not from the person you are having sex with”

Do I have to explain anymore from this quote? She nailed it on the head. You’re the only person who can change your confidence.

“You become a woman the first time you get fitted for a bra and realise you’ve been wearing the wrong size your whole fucking life”

I was 20 years old. 20! Once I had been measured I realised I was wearing the wrong size for so long. No wonder I hated bras so much.

“We girls are conditioned to the no we should hold out or we’d be a labelled a slut”

Girls can have sex as much as guys can. What differences does it make? The number of people that women or men have slept with does not determine how valued they are by others.

“Isn’t it sad that when a girl says she was sexually assaulted, our first instinct is to think she’s probably lying”

Sexual assault is not something to be joked about or used as a lie. So many women and men experience sexual assault and it’s pushed aside because of other people’s ignorance.

“There is nothing better than being your own boss. Well, there is, actually: not having to work at all”

I couldn’t think of anything better than being my own boss and eventually this is something I’ll achieve. How could you not want to be in control of your working hours and how your work load can influence others around you.

I personally think Amy Schumer is more real than most understand. I’m all of these quotes she points out obvious statements but not that obvious to most of society.

Urban Decay All Nighter Foundation

For Christmas 2016 I received the Urban Decay All Nighter Foundation as a gift from my parents. I had tried a sample portion during the summer of 2016 and I really enjoyed it and had informed my parents as a possible gift idea. So, ever since i’ve been testing it out to see whether it’s actually as good as I remember. Having spent the last month wearing it I’ve realised it’s actually not as good as I remember which has majorly disappointed me. So, since I was having so much trouble deciding whether I actually liked it I had my best friend Megan test it out too on a night out and Megan really liked it. Today’s review is going to be slightly different than usual, this time you’ll have 2 different reviews from myself and Megan.

Megan has combination to oily skin, the same as me but I do have quite dry skin around my nose. We both wore the foundation on the same night and throughout the night I noticed that the foundation was definitely sitting differently on our skins. For me I found that when it’s first applied, it’s beautiful and makes me look flawless but across the time that I wear it I find that it rubs off around my pores and nose area and really makes my skin look quite gross. Before it starts to move away from my nose I usually get around 3 hours wear time out of it and since it’s the ‘all nighter’ foundation I kind of expect it to last a lot longer for 3 hours. Megan actually really enjoyed wearing this foundation, she found that it didn’t go patchy at all and stayed put around her oily areas. It blended so comfortably on her skin and it literally done as it said on the tin and lasted all night.

I personally wouldn’t ever purchase this again but I know Megan loves it and would definitely wear this happily. Let us know what you think of it and give us recommendations for other foundations you’ve loved.

Book Review: Between Sisters

My first review of February is on the novel Between Sisters by Cathy Kelly. I love a new book and having recommendations so let me know some of your recommended books in the comments. I bought this book from WH Smith in the buy one get one half price deal and if I’m totally honest, it wasn’t even worth half of its original price.

Cassie and Coco had lived their whole lives without their mother which left serious insecurities about parenting and separation from their loved ones. Now adults Cassie and her husband Shay have two beautiful young daughters whilst Coco remains single, childless but full of ambition with her fashion boutique. Yet between them both something continues to feel missing.

This book was really disappointing but I’m not saying I don’t recommend it since everybody has their own preference and tastes. I found that this book dragged, I didn’t actually get into it until half way through, which was 12 chapters. I found that it didn’t flow all that well and I probably would have enjoyed the story if it had been written in a different way. It jumped from story to story without any clarity and it just confused me a lot. I struggled with this book massively which influenced how I felt about the actual novel. It want interesting at all and the story was very dull. It’s such a shame since the blurb made it so enticing.

If you’ve read this, let me know whether you liked it.

Healthy Popcorn and Wine

Do you ever find yourself settling down with a movie and a bowl full of popcorn but feel crazy guilty for eating your body weight in sugar fulled popcorn and drinking far too much wine? I feel you! SkinnyPop got in touch to discuss the best combinations for a night in with a glass of wine and guilt free popcorn of only 39 calories a cup. Seriously, could life get any better? Use more calories on wine and have a low-calorie snack to fill your sweet tooth.

At SkinnyPop Popcorn they have created the ideal wine and popcorn parings. Below I’ve attached the infographic that shows you exactly what the best combinations are with white and red wine. Personally I’m more of a rosé gal but I will drink certain white wines like chardonnay and I can’t wait to test these popcorn and wine pairings with my friends and a good movie. I think low-calorie popcorn is a great snack for anybody who are dieting but still want to treat themselves without feeling horrible about it. I also think the popcorn would be ideal for lunchboxes for children (not including the wine obviously) and they will never know how healthy this popcorn actually is!

I’m a sucker for a portion of sweet popcorn and according to the photo it’s best combined with a glass of banyuls and I’m yet to actually try this wine. Perhaps at my next cheat meal I will test the theory! Check out the infograph and choose your favourite wine from the list to test the pairings. Let me know whether your favourites really do match. January Favourites

January 2017 has come to an end and it has been very good to me! During the month I’ve been loving so many new product and other little things. I’m just going to jump right into my January favourites because there are quite a few to get through.

Firstly, I’ve cut and coloured my hair and although it was already in an alright condition I wanted to improve it  and make it healthier. I come across the Aussie 3 Minute Miracle Colour Deep Conditioning Treatment. I purchase this from my local Boots or Superdrug for £4.99 but I know that Savers sell it for slightly cheaper, I use any of these shops. It’s really helped to smooth out my frizzy hair and create a beautiful shine. It’s also helped to increase the colour of my hair and after colouring it a dark blonde it’s now slightly lighter. It’s brilliant for the price and totally worth it the £4.99.

For Christmas I received the Too Faced Hotel Grand Cafe collection, which was a limited edition palette. The collection comes with 3 beautiful palettes which consist of 6 eyeshadows and 1 blusher or bronzer as well as a small sample of the Too Faced Better than Sex mascara. I’ve been loving these eyeshadows, they all blend together perfectly and the wide combination of eyeshadows in each palette means that you can create a look using all 3 palettes, so you definitely get your money’s worth. Unfortunately I’m not sure how much this cost but I know it’s from Debenhams and I’m not sure whether it’s still available. If you can get your hands on it I totally recommend purchasing it as it has all the colours you’ll ever need to any makeup look.

My final beauty product is the Sleek Matte me Liquid Lipstick in Birthday Suit and Velvet Slipper. I’ve mentioned Birthday Suit in another favourites before and it’s a beautiful beige colour with pink tones. It’s perfect for an everyday look or even a glam night out. It’s definitely universal and will suit so many skin tones. Another from the collection that I’ve been loving is Velvet Slipper which is totally out of my comfort zone but yet still gorgeous and I absolutely love this. It’s dark purple and I’ve been wearing this with a natural eye to make the lip colour stand out more and it’s beautiful. The formula of these liquid lipsticks are incredible and they don’t feel heavy or sticky. However, they do transfer slightly when eating or drinking and you will definitely have to redo if you have eaten or drank a lot. They’re available in Boots and Superdrug for around £5 but totally worth it.

From beauty to fashion, January has given me some gorgeous new clothing items this month including this beautiful red rain coat from New Look. This was £35.99 and totally worth every penny. I love bright coloured rain coats and I was definitely in need of a new coat in the rainy weather so when I saw this I fell in love with it. It’s perfectly for a jeans and boots look and has a lovely fit.

I went into Dorothy Perkins to take a look at their sale items and I had been looking for a pair of black statement heeled boots for both a night time look or day time. I come across these and knew they were exactly what I was looking for. They are basic black boots that can really make an outfit which was what I wanted. They were originally £35 and I paid £25 and they are a definitely bargain.

For Christmas I also received The Fresh Prince of Bel Air box set and I have been binge watching it. Shortly after Christmas it was also made available on Netflix which is fantastic for all those who want to watch it but don’t own it. It’s very old school comedy and Will Smith is brilliant in it. If you don’t know what it is, it’s about a family living in Bel Air and take in their nephew Will to give him a better life and out of the trouble that he was one getting in when living with his mother in Philadelphia.

Matt and I regularly watch films together, as do many couples. However, this one film we watched was life changing and utterly brilliant. Eye in the Sky was definitely my favourite film that I’ve been in a long time. I can’t really explain the movie too much without giving spoilers but I will say that it was especially special as it was in memory of Alan Rickman.

Ed Sheeran released 2 new singles in preparation for his new album which is due to be released early this year. They both are fantastic but my favourite is Shape of You, it’s so catchy and upbeat. Definitely different to his usual songs but still one of his best. I love it a lot and have been listening to it repeatedly.

I have been introduced to green tea and it has totally converted me from my love of fizzy drinks. I haven’t stopped buying it and eventually I may have nowhere to store them but my favourites have been mint as well as pineapple and passionfruit. They’re so refreshing and make my body feel so much more healthier.

Finally, my last favourite of January are Kettle Chips, specifically the cheddar and red onion flavour. I don’t really know what to say about them except that I like them a lot and will definitely have to stop eating them in fear of actually becoming one.

There we have it, my January favourites! Let me know some of yours and in the meantime, take a look at my social media:
